“Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law;
Yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.”
(Psalm 119:34)
‘Keep’, is to retain, hold, guard and observe, this only is that commanded of man to keep thy law, and this only can be observed with the whole heart when the understanding from the Lord is given it.
On the one hand we have a conscious awareness of the Law, but to have its understanding is considered only when it is first obeyed. Some have said “I know, I know”, but it can be replied that, ‘to know and not to do, is not to know nor understand’. When we obey the Word of the Lord we are given understanding to keep and to observe it. We obey by faith first, our faith is then rewarded with understanding that we may indeed observe the law of the Lord with our whole heart.
But I fear my brethren that our understanding or ‘knowledge’ of the law of God is refrained by God for our oft unwillingness to obey. Eluhu tells Job “But if they obey not, They shall perish by the sword, And they shall die without knowledge.” (Jb 36:12)
