“ With my whole heart have I sought thee:
O let me not wander from thy commandments.”
It is with our heart that we seek after the Lord; it is our heart that rejects God and it is only our heart which believes. The evangelist was asked what it may be that can hinder a man from baptism, his answer “if thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest” (Acts 8:37). Therefore, it is only with the heart that we both deny and seek the Lord.
But the heart is feeble, rarely can it remain strong on a point and often subject to turning from love. The Lord confirms this alterable state of the heart when he says “because iniquity shall abound the love of many shall wax cold” (Mt 24:12). If our love for Christ may wander, what then of our keeping his commandments, might we turn?
Helpless we were and helpless we are, we could not come to Christ without the father drawing us (Jn 6:44), and we cannot remain in Christ without his keeping of us (2 Tim 1:12). Only the Lord can keep us in the way; but only when we seek him.
